about the shala
In 2002, Kristin Leigh and Barbara Verrochi opened the shala in union square (which means home or abode in sanskrit), to create a place and community where—in the chaos of new york city life—peoplecould gather, breathe freely, build strength and be at home in their bodies.
The shala offers traditional ashtanga classes and vinyasa classes that emphasize the connection between breath and movement from asana to asana. Over time the body becomes light and strong and the mind becomes calm and steady.
"the shala is my yoga studio downtown and home away from home for the past ten years. its' owners barbara and kristin have managed to create, in the center of all this hellish urban melee, a peaceful, grounded sanctuary that radiates spiritual truth and goodness. they attract a following of badass, ball-busting creative types who truly value serenity, service, calmness and inner strength over being a rigid type a workaholic asshole. i can't live (no joke) without it."
